Melanie King

Melanie has been a dedicated and inspiring yoga instructor for nearly 25 years, beginning her journey in 1999. Her path started with Ashtanga, but a quest for a deeper, more scientific and medically-based understanding of the practice led her to Kripalu in Western Massachusetts. There, she had the profound opportunity to study with Stephen Cope, who was engaged in groundbreaking research with Harvard to explore the very answers Melanie herself was seeking.

This dedication to the scientific basis of yoga naturally evolved into a deep affection for Yin. In 2006, she furthered her expertise by studying under Yin's founders, Sara Powers and Paul Griley. Her commitment to inner practice is equally strong, having learned meditation at the Maha Bodhi Society in Bihar, India, in 2000.

A two-time cancer survivor and mother of two, Melanie brings a profound sense of resilience, compassion, and real-world understanding to her teaching. She invites students to connect with their practice through a blend of intuitive wisdom and informed, evidence-based knowledge.

Jonathan - Somatic Embodiment teacher

Jonathan developed a love for internal Chinese martial arts after joining a Tai Chi class in a park in Berkeley in his early twenties. Deeply impressed by the qualities displayed by the various martial arts, meditation and embodiment teachers he has met since, he has made it his passion to learn and pass on methods to cultivate the mind, spirit and body.

“I strive to be loving and powerful, and to teach others how to achieve the same. Much of our pain and suffering is unnecessary, we just need the tools to realize this for ourselves.”

John pence - tai chi instructor

John was introduced to tai chi in 2004 when he was looking for calm and focus as a new father and work-from-home dad. In the time since, he has stuck with Yang style tai chi as his main focus, with about 15 years in baguazhang and hsing-i chuan, and 3 years in Chen style tai chi. In 2023, John won the gold medal in Chinese swordsmanship at the CACMA Open tournament in Raleigh.

In his 50s, John decided to pick up a new combat sport and began competition in historic European martial arts up and down the east coast. Never on the medal podium (excusably, given that he was fighting competitors half his age), he learned a lot and had a blast. So while John teaches Yang style faithfully to its traditions, a broader martial arts education illuminates aspects of the art that might be dogma for dogma's sake, and he encourages students to experiment and find the truth of their own practice.

John is a licensed physical therapist assistant in Kansas and Georgia. He explores the overlap of anatomy, neuromuscular function, breath, pain science, and tai chi in his mind when people are talking to him about other things he should be paying attention to.
